''It's a telenovela that doesn't have guerrillas, nothing about narco-trafficking, so it's a parallel world to everything that's really happening in the country,'' said Ana Maria Orozco, the 27-year-old actress who plays Betty. It is an escape - if fleeting - from the hard realities of life in a deeply troubled nation. ''Betty,'' as the telenovela is universally known, has become a national obsession in a country rife with war, graft and a sense that things are not getting better.
Meanwhile, thousands of fans - including President Andres Pastrana - flooded the RCN network, the maker of the soap opera, with e-mails and faxes calling for Betty to maintain her honor. Colombia held its collective breath in the days leading to Betty's triumph, with newspaper editorialists and politicians pleading with the telenovela's writer to keep Betty honest. In a memorable turn of events several months ago that had the country on edge, the bespectacled Betty turned down a big bribe that would have made her rich. In a country where corruption is rampant and an increasingly brutal war dominates the news, Colombians have been drawn by the millions to the tale of a noble and loyal heroine who gets ahead through brains and hard work.

She is Betty Pinzon Solano, the ugly-duckling protagonist of the runaway Colombian soap opera, or telenovela, that has reigned supreme in this country for 14 months, ''Yo Soy Betty La Fea,'' or ''I Am Betty the Ugly.'' And her creators are confident that she will soon be watched in places as divergent as Brazil, Spain and Israel, where Colombian soap operas have done well before.
